Rig count in region stayed mostly flat over past year, but older units are struggling to find new contracts
Last year, the supply of drilling vessels in the US Gulf of Mexico tightened and is expected to continue until 2020. Companies in the region are preparing to drill in more complex areas.
Leslie Cook, principal analyst at Wood Mackenzie, said: "supply is tight. Compared with last year, it's not as easy to find the drillers anytime, anywhere. Last year there were some RIGS sitting idle. This year there are none."
The number of rigs in this area has remained stable, ranging from 21 to 23 in the past year. A monthly report by Clarkson shows that in October, the US Gulf of Mexico used 25 floating rigs.
